Champions League Update
Oh wait, were you expecting a post about the UEFA Champions League? Sorry, that already gets enough coverage in the media. What about the African Champions League? It’s true, they have one of those too, it’s not just the Europeans that get to have Champions League fun. Although, good luck ever catching a CAF Champions League game on TV.
The first leg of the preliminary round for the 2008 edition of the tournament took place this past weekend and there were some surprises. The one that of course got my attention was Togolese champions ASKO Kara defeating former winners, Union Douala of Cameroon 3-1. One of the biggest upsets in the opening round of games was keyed by an early 2nd half penalty from Mama Issofou sending the Togolese to victory. Here’s hoping they can hold in the 2nd leg and advance to the next round and draw some attention to football in Togo.
In other upsets, two Ghanaian sides and former winners, Hearts of Oak and Ashanti Gold both fell to defeat in their opening games.
Trying to find up-to-date coverage of these games is about as easy as following your 10 year old sons Little League baseball team, but I’ll do my best.
Gotta go, the other Champions League is on TV now.
