Togo’s Golden Generation

humansperm10012005 copy.jpgTogo’s football team heading to FIFA World Cup 2006 can be thought of as Togo’s Golden Generation. With talented players impressing a slew of teams all over Europe, this generation of Togo players has really blossomed. The other night I was watching a game on TV and saw some unlikely goals scored. Players capitalized on defensive disarray and stuck the ball into the one spot the goalie couldn’t get to. It occured to me that football is a metaphor for life itself.

The field is awash with spermies, all swimming around and bumping into each other. Their one desire is to get to the egg (goal) and only one one them can make it. Sometimes, against all odds, a lucky spermie (player) pops up and finds the ball at his feet. Bingo, we have contact!

So we move onto Togo’s Golden Generation. Compared to the current Togo youth team, the Sparrow Hawks are in great shape. They are in World Cup 2006 and have it all to play for. Togo’s youth team has just been eliminated from the African Cup of Nations. A 3-1 victory over Niger, was a goal shy of qualification. Life is cyclical, and maybe Togo’s women’s team will be the next to blossom.
