Togo’s chances against South Korea

June 6th, 2006 | By: Nick O'Neill | 5 Comments »

Togo is in Group G in World Cup 2006. The other teams in Group G are South Korea, Switzerland and France. Togo’s first opponents are South Korea on June 13th (2pm in Frankfurt). What chance does Togo have of beating South Korea?

Togo came top of their World Cup qualifying group, overtaking Senegal by 2 points. During the 10 qualifying games, Togo was W7, D2, L1, GF20, GA8.

So Togo can score against weak teams, but does let goals in. Against the strongest other team in the group, Senegal, Togo won 3-1 and drew 2-2.

Here’s how South Korea did in qualifying. Their group contained Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Kuwait. The Koreans went W3, D1, L2, GF9, GA5. Against the strongest other team in their group, Saudi Arabia, South Korea lost 2-0 and 1-0.

Given the great performance South Korea put in at the last World Cup, I expect them to beat Togo.

The only way I can see Togo getting a result from this game is if they play the way Ghana did against South Korea. Harass the Koreans when they do not have possession and move the ball around quickly when they do. If they do that, I can predict a 1-1 draw. If not, there’s no telling how much the Koreans might win by once the first goal goes in. And that would be a horrible start for the Sparrowhawks.

did u hear? Togo’s Otto Pfister gave up his position today!!!
along with the coaching staff!!!
so who’s gunna lead them now eh?

Korea has to watch out and use this as their greatest chance. Prepare well and pound them bad on Tuesday so that they’ll get credited for good goal points just in case they do come in second with a draw with another contry…
