Profile of country
Togo is an impoverished strip of land measuring 887km by 56km in West Africa. The crops are cocoa, coffee and cotton and people generally spend there time looking for lost change dropped by someone else, or building tree houses in preparation of the next elephant stampede.
Most Togoans are laid back and friendly. A 25 year dictatorship has left them resigned to living a hot, underpaid lifestyle with access to the beach. Sunday afternoons are mayhem with the desert dwellers competing with the city goers at the volleyball pits on Mucky Donkey beach.
The national sport used to be Aweee, a sadistic game where 2 combatants beat each other into oblivion with hardened balls of rhino dung. The shortage of rhinos has meant a shift towards football, but be warned, when an occassional rhino wanders through a village, its shirts off and ‘let’s play with the rhino shit’.
