Customs in Togo

Visitors to Togo find the people warm and accepting. A series of civil wars and invasions from other countries has made the Togoese used to having guests from overseas. When stepping out from the airport a visitor will be welcomed by smiling, waving men with cars and offers to visit villages enroute to your hotel will doubtless be offered. Friendship is very important to Togolese and establishing new friends should be done as soon as possible. A simple grin should be accompanied by ‘eye-locking’ with your intended new friend. Introductions are not necessary, just announce yourself with a confident ‘Je avec vous, vous avec moi!’
